Description
Delicious and savory homemade nduja sausage rolls made with flaky puff pastry filled with spicy nduja and optional melted cheese, perfect as a flavorful snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
Pastry
- 500 grams Puff Pastry (Keep chilled until ready to use.)
Filling
- 200 grams Nduja (Use high-quality nduja for best flavor.)
- 100 grams Cheese (optional) (Shredded mozzarella or cheddar recommended.)
Topping
- 1 large Egg (Beaten with a splash of water for egg wash.)
- 1 pinch Salt (Use sparingly as nduja is salty.)
- 1 pinch Black Pepper (Freshly ground for best flavor.)
- 1 tablespoon Fresh Herbs (optional) (Chopped parsley or thyme recommended.)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) to ensure it reaches the perfect temperature for baking the rolls evenly.
- Soften Pastry: Let the chilled puff pastry sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes to soften slightly, making it easier to roll out without cracking.
- Roll Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle, approximately 0.5 cm thick, to create the base for your sausage rolls.
- Cut Strips: Cut the large pastry sheet into long strips about 10 cm wide, which will each hold a portion of the nduja filling.
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the spicy nduja with shredded cheese if using, blending well for a creamy, flavorful filling.
- Fill Pastry Strips: Place a generous spoonful of the nduja mixture along one edge of each pastry strip, ready for rolling.
- Roll Up: Roll the pastry over the nduja filling, carefully tucking in the sides to create secure, neat rolls that won’t leak during baking.
- Repeat Filling: Repeat the filling and rolling process with the remaining pastry strips and nduja mixture.
- Prepare Baking Tray: Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the rolls evenly spaced to allow room for puffing up.
- Egg Wash & Seasoning: Brush the tops of the rolls with beaten egg wash to achieve a golden finish. Lightly sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- Bake Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until the rolls are golden brown and puffed up, indicating fully cooked pastry and hot filling.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the sausage rolls to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving, letting the flavors settle and making them easier to handle.
Notes
- Use high-quality nduja for the best flavor and a spicy kick.
- Cheese is optional but adds a creamy texture; mozzarella or cheddar work well.
- Be cautious with salt as nduja is naturally salty.
- Fresh herbs like parsley or thyme can be added for extra aroma and flavor.
- Ensure puff pastry is well chilled until just before use for optimal flakiness.
- Serve warm for the best taste and texture experience.
