Description

This Healthy Halloween Snack features green apple quarters transformed into fun, spooky monster bites. Layered with creamy peanut butter, adorned with cheese fangs, pumpkin seeds as teeth, and candy eyes, it’s a tasty and nutritious treat perfect for Halloween parties or a festive snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruits

  • 3 green apples

Spreads & Cheeses

  • 3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 2 ounces sliced cheddar or Colby jack cheese

Nuts & Seeds

  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin or sunflower seeds

Decorations

  • 1 package candy eyes (about 20 pieces used)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apple Quarters: Quarter the green apples and slice off the core and seeds. Carefully cut out a v-shape into the center of each apple quarter to create the monster’s mouth. Repeat for all apple pieces.
  2. Apply Peanut Butter: Spread a thin layer of creamy peanut butter inside the carved mouths of all apple slices, providing a sticky base for toppings.
  3. Add Teeth: Press several pumpkin or sunflower seeds along the edge of the peanut butter in the mouth area to simulate monster teeth on each apple slice.
  4. Insert Cheese Fangs: Place a triangular piece of cheddar or Colby jack cheese into each monster mouth, mimicking fangs.
  5. Attach Candy Eyes: Use a small amount of the remaining peanut butter to adhere candy eyes on top of the apple slices, giving them their scary look.
  6. Serve: Present the monster apple slices immediately for the best freshness and crunch.

Notes

  • Use green apples for a tart flavor and a vibrant color that contrasts nicely with the cheese and peanut butter.
  • Substitute peanut butter with any nut or seed butter if allergies are a concern.
  • For a vegan version, replace cheese with vegan cheese alternatives and use vegan-friendly candy eyes or skip them.
  • Prepare just before serving to avoid apple slices browning; alternatively, dip apple slices in lemon water to slow oxidation.
  • Sunflower seeds offer a nut-free alternative to pumpkin seeds.
