Description

This Greek Chicken Gyros recipe features juicy, marinated grilled chicken breasts served on warm pita bread with a refreshing Greek yogurt-cucumber sauce, fresh vegetables, and crumbled feta cheese. It combines classic Mediterranean flavors like oregano, lemon, and garlic to create an authentic and flavorful dish perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Marinade and Chicken

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Yogurt Sauce

  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup cucumber, diced

Assembly

  • 1/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 pieces pita bread
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Grill. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat to ensure it is hot enough for perfectly cooking the chicken.
  2. Prepare Marinade. In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  3. Marinate Chicken. Place the chicken breasts in a zip-top bag, pour the marinade over them, seal the bag securely, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to infuse.
  4. Make Yogurt Sauce. In a separate bowl, combine plain Greek yogurt with diced cucumber, then place in the refrigerator to chill and meld flavors.
  5. Grill Chicken. Remove chicken from marinade and grill on medium-high heat for about 6 to 7 minutes on each side or until fully cooked through and internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  6. Rest and Slice Chicken. Take the grilled chicken off the heat and let it rest for a few minutes to retain juices, then slice it into thin strips suitable for assembling gyros.
  7. Warm Pita Bread. Place pita bread on the grill for approximately 1 minute per side to warm and soften them, making them easier to fold.
  8. Assemble Gyros. Lay sliced chicken onto each warmed pita, add a generous spoonful of yogurt-cucumber sauce, top with thinly sliced red onions, halved cherry tomatoes, crumbled feta cheese, and garnish with fresh parsley.
  9. Serve. Fold the pita over the fillings, secure with a toothpick if necessary, and serve immediately to enjoy the freshest flavors.

Notes

  • Marinate the chicken for longer (up to 4 hours) for more intense flavor.
  • Use whole wheat pita for a healthier option.
  • Customize toppings by adding lettuce, olives, or hot sauce if desired.
  • Ensure chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F to guarantee safety.
  • Use fresh herbs like oregano or parsley for enhanced freshness.
