Ingredients
Sauce
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon sugar or honey (optional)
Main Ingredients
- 8 ounces lo mein noodles (or spaghetti substitute)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or neutral oil like canola)
- 1/2 pound beef (flank steak, sirloin, or skirt steak), thinly sliced
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1/4 cup sliced onion or green onions
Garnish
- Sesame seeds
- Sliced green onions
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, rice vinegar (if using), and sugar or honey until smooth. Set aside to allow flavors to meld and the cornstarch to dissolve.
- Cook the Noodles: Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then cook the lo mein noodles according to package instructions until just al dente. Drain and set aside, tossing with a little oil to prevent sticking.
- Sauté the Beef: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef and stir-fry until browned but still tender, about 3-4 minutes. Remove beef from the pan and set aside.
- Cook the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced onions. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the broccoli florets and continue stir-frying for 3-4 minutes until broccoli is crisp-tender.
- Combine Everything: Return the cooked beef to the skillet, then add the drained noodles. Pour the prepared sauce over everything and toss well to coat. Stir-fry together for another 2 minutes allowing the sauce to thicken slightly and flavors to combine.
- Serve: Remove from heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately while hot and enjoy your homemade Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein!
Notes
- Use low sodium soy sauce to control salt levels.
- Substitute spaghetti noodles if lo mein noodles are unavailable.
- For a spicier kick, add red pepper flakes or chili paste during stir-fry.
- Be sure not to overcook broccoli; maintain slight crispness for best texture.
- Thinly slice beef against the grain for tenderness.
